White lies are accepted by people because it is almost impossible to find out whether the lie is true or not. In the case of usual lies, people state something incorrect in order to protect or benefit themselves, and mostly it is clear whether what they say is not true. For example, if a person had stolen something and said he did not, it is clearly a lie because stealing is an actual fact. However, defining white lie is difficult because the most white lies are about the matter of preference. For example, even if a person praises the friends' horrible tasting meal or terrible looking hairstyle, no one can declare he is lying since those opinions are based on the personal values. The liar can say that he truly thought it was good since he has a little bit unusual perspective. There are some white lies which obviously disagree with the truth such as the myth of Santa Clause, but it is still difficult to prove that the white-liars are lying. The myth of Santa Clause is a good example; most people can say Sant does not exist, but nobody can say whether the people telling the myth of Sant know the truth or not. Everyone has the freedom of belief and no one has the way to find out if the belief is authentic.
Some may say that white lies can protect the feeling of people who received the lies, but I think they do not actually benefit anyone but the liars themselves. I think the reason people, or at least I, tell white lie is not to avoid hurting their feeling, but to avoid loosing friend by giving the unpleasant feeling. However, people ask question because they try to know what they don't know. Similarly, people share their work or idea because they need to know other people's value or perspective. Even though the idea of good or bad is slightly different depending on people, it is the almost consistent measurement which is established collectively, and not telling the true opinion take opportunity to learn the collective value away from people. Also, most people who received white lies must eventually face the truth someday, and they will have the unpleasant feeling inevitably. Thus, white lies does not help people's improvement, but just hide the truth contemporarily and make the liars seem nice. Indeed, white lies are accepted in society not because it is for other people, but because it is an unprovable way to improve the liars' impression.
I agree with the speaker about white lies being fine because they're harmless. People lie about small things out of politeness, and they don't want to hurt feelings. The speaker also mentioned that telling the truth may be worse than telling a small lie, and I agree. Everyone knows the phrase "the truth hurts", and sometimes it really does. However, personally for me, I would rather have the hard, painful truth rather than the small lie. It would help me see what I'm doing wrong or if there's anything that I can do to make myself a better person.
It was interesting to hear when the speaker had identified the definitions between a white lie and a hard lie. His definition of a hard lie was that the intentions were to protect ones self. The definition of a white lie was said to be intended to prevent hurting others. I found this to be an interesting perspective and a valid reason for his opinion on the question given. He voiced his opinion that white lies are okay due to the fact that the truth can hurt and be worse than telling a small white lie. I agree with the speaker after listening to his thoughts and reasonings behind them.
He lied to her to protect her. This is something we've all heard before. Ignorance is bliss, and sometimes it's better to not know the truth than to be hurt by it. That's why I feel that white lies can be acceptable at times. Why put someone through a bad situation or hurt them when a simple lie can completely blind them to the unfortunate truth. Sometimes even leaving out facts and not telling the entire truth can save a situation. Lying is not okay, and I personally do condone even white lies. However, I know through personal experience that a white lie can be the easy way out at least for the time being.
