Great post on setting. You're right, writers have to create a believable, real world for readers to step into, or the story will be lost. There's nothing better than "seeing" a story world unfold as though on a movie screen while one is reading. Setting can also serve as a character in the story. It can underscore theme, stand as a metaphor for people and/or events, and act as a mirror to emotions. A well-thought-out setting only enhances any story, and completes a reader's enjoyment. Thanks for reminding us of all this!

Indeed, opening the window, will attracted the flies. I think that is probably the hardest thing for a writer to do, that is to create a believable world that begins in his mind.
